Paul St. Clair ([info]sanspantalons) wrote in [info]bringingbesback,

Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me? ...not anymore.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin.

Once upon a time, there was a world.

And it was pretty damn nifty. People frolicked and played to their heart's content. Leeroy Jenkins was abundant and plentiful. Ragnaros was downed. More DoTs were needed. And stay the F**k away from the whelps!

But like all worlds, there were problems. Pretty damn big ones. How big, you say? As big as your average american football player with padding in most cases. Great for a Warrior (...debatedly) not so good for a caster. The male models for a lot of races looked a little ridiculous due to their 'macho' overly muscled nature. It got to the point that a lot of people rolled female characters just because those models actually looked presentable, at least. Granted, a little too presentable judging by the Nelf Female's hidden racial that apparently gives +150 to all resistances if you strip down to your underwear.

People got used to it in time, but that underlying problem was always there. The male models looked stupid, the female models were either normal or just plain hyper-sexualised. And then it started to get worse. You can't so much as glance at Goldshire without seeing at least one naked nelf female nowadays. People RP sex. People ask anyone who hasn't rolled a nelf female why they bothered making such an 'ugly' character. The underlying problem in making nothing but beefcake guys and cheesecake girls grew.

But then, a shining ray of light struck the land when The Burning Crusade Expansion was announced and screenshots followed after. The noble heroes of Blizzard delivered unto the people the Blood Elf. Magically addicted, evil little casters who fought for the Horde and looked great doing it. Finally, in the form of the skinny, slender but not unrealistic models for both the male and the female of the race, there was a variation from the same old, same old. A little splash of spice in an otherwise bland, homogenized stew that only seemed to cater to one group's tastes.

Videos were released of dances, animations and various other tricks the Blood Elves had up their sleeves. Some awesome audio for emotes got out. And a lot of people loved it.

And then changes came...

So. It was brought to Blizzard's attention by some players in the American BETA that the Blood Elves didn't look fierce or imposing enough. And Blizzard looked at the race from a conceptual and aesthetic stance and changed them, increasing muscle mass in the arms, thighs and chest, adding facial hair and taking away a hairstyle or two. The officially stated reasons were that the original models looked too 'feminine' and that to bring them more in line with the Horde they needed to look 'stronger' and 'more threatening'.

The problems people are having with this are legion;

Firstly, there's the fact that a lot of people just plain don't like the look of the new models. They look ludicrously bulky now and take away the slim, sinister, cunning look the race originally had.

Next up, it doesn't fit lore wise. When it was announced that Blood Elves would be the one race out of ten that wouldn't get Warriors, it was widely acknowledged that whilst magic aided them in their fight as Paladins they just didn't work as Warriors. They were too magically inclined and a little too frail for it all and their bodies reflected that. Now, they look bulky and beefy enough to tank far better than any gnome or undead. ...but they're still magically inclined and not cut out as warriors.

Third, there's the message these changes send. Having looked at the US BETA forums and the posts complaining about the Blood elf's skinny appearance, it seems that a lot of them can't go a few sentences without throwing in how 'gay' it all looks. They think that the loot animation makes it look like they're 'bending over to... recieve something...' and that the casting animations make them little better than mincing ballerinas. So, for starters we have the idea that 'skinny' and a lack of overwhelming muscle mass = femme, not-manly and 'gay'. Then we have the idea that somehow differing from stereotypical 'macho' ideals is wrong and doesn't make one strong enough to fight alongside the Horde. And then we have Blizzard turning around and validating these ideas by catering to these complaints. The message in that is pretty damn worrying, if you ask me.

After that, there's the fact that original complainers aren't even happy now. They feel that Blizzard made a good start by bulking the boys up but there's other things they can do to get rid of their 'flamboyant' nature. Nix the animations, especially the jump. Get rid of the silly emotes and their way of talking. In short, make them red, blond Night Elves. It seems these people won't be satisfied, but Blizzard are scrambling to try anyway. ...whereas a lot of us will be satisfied with just this one little change.

Finally, there's the time issue to consider. People are dying to get to Outworld. They're dying to start getting to level 70. And of all the things Blizzard needs to do between now and the release date, they waste time with this? From what I've heard, now that the model has been changed, most of the animations look stupid and don't fit with the new anatomy. ...will Blizzard have to push back the release date to address that? Will they have to push it back again if there are still complaints from BETA once they've done that?

For those of you who saw all that and thought 'tl;dr', I'll sum up. We don't like the changes to the model. We'd like to see Blizzard go back to the old ones. We feel that by making these changes, the company is sending a pretty damn scary message that validates homophobic and sexist thinking. We've made a Petition to reflect how we feel. We hope that by voicing our concerns and views now, they'll be some chance of rectifying this problem in the months before TBC hits stores.

If you agree with any of the problems I listed above, please sign the petition.
If you have friends who play WoW, please show them this community and the petition.
If you go anywhere that discusses WoW, please link to this comm.
If you know anyone who might be concerned by these changes and what they reflect, please link them.

In short, let's bring our Belf Boys Back!

OMG win. What if I like my Blood Elves scrawny?

October 26 2006, 03:08:12 UTC 5 years ago

I LOOOOVE scrawny belfs >_< I was so excited. I'd never play a fraggin' human male. :( I hope BlizzBlue sees the uproar in the other direction, and gives me back my teeny belf males, especially given that the rationale for the change is nothing but crap catering to a crowd of insecure, adolescent males who haven't touched a girl anyway.

Okay, that's an over-generalization. But dammit, I've been in Goldshire and the Barrens - I know how this shit rolls!

What's funny is that the old ones weren't even scrawny, per se. Look at the basketball court at your local park and probably half the athletic young men there have less muscle mass than the Blood Elf males were to have. Look at track runners. Look at swimmers.

The same issue came up with the Drakkin males in EverQuest recently. And at least those stayed the same post-beta as they did when they were introduced. Maybe with a slight change to the running animations, but nothing more. No complaints once introduced, really.

You don't have to be on steroids to be strong and masculine. Hell, you could probably ask most women which they prefer as body-types for RL men and then the guys might get a clue as to what is masculine. If women prefer "gay" guys, then I think there's going to be some mighty lonely "manly" men.

And to echo what's already been said by others, perhaps all these muscles others are asking for is compensating for a lack of something else... :P

Are you planning on putting any images into this post so people can see what you're on about without hunting around for them?

Irritated

Thank you! That just said what I thought the second I heard and saw the change. I was so happy there was a less steroided male in the game. But noooo. Get a few complaints from insecure guys, and they change em. It's not like they have to play one if it bothers them that much. And changing it does seem to send a messege.

I'd like to know when thin men added up to being 'gay' or less than masculine.

Horde could use a lightweight race that isn't dead. It gives a nice contrast, or at least an option that really isn't available on either side. Horde has no real pretty aspect to them. Females have maybe 1 or 2 faces that doesn't look hag like. And on alliance side human males look like gorillas, dwarves and gnomes...are dwarves and gnomes. Draenei are giganormous. And Night Elves, were harped on for a long time about being less than manly, but they are strangely built. Long frame, tiny waist, big thighs and arms.

Looks aren't all there is to the game, but my god, put the male blood elves back the way they were. Evil can be thin too!

I do not want muscle BE o.O.... Peeps that want that in the horde can play orcs or whatever :(
I really loved the way the first model came out, it looked more like a normal guy, not a bodybuilder pro...
I was so hyper they finally said November 2006, and now it is January 2007 (hopefully)... if that has to do anything with changing this model GRRRRRR!

So, does this mean that This image is not a male B-elf? They just posted this shot recently, as it's at the top of their news page's most recently added. I admit the female models disgust me as far as apparently flexible their lower spine is, but the male models actually looked GOOD.

In fact, all the bearable male-models (Well, ok Dwarves are -really- supposed to be like that, but..) are on the horde already (trolls, undead, Tauren it kinda makes sense to be, pardon the pun, beefy), but leave them this one too PLEASE. That screen you posted up there looked like someone stuck an airhose in his chest and inflated him. Ugh!

Hehe, it's actually kinda funny when you think about how close the male and female BEs seemed to look before the change. That from behind you weren't totally sure what gender image was.

I remember when the BE were first announced that they started having more images of them, people would talk about how excited they were for a non He-man looking male. But then someone would jokingly say "There's male blood elves?!"

I don't see a huge difference between the old and the new. But I think bulking them up was a pointless change. >_<

I didn't really notice a difference and I don't really care. However, I am confused over why Blizz did it.
The male Bloodelves are the fruity guys the nelfs didn't turn out to be. Look at their jokes!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7356708322203507049&q=blood+elf&hl=en
"Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot..like..me?" and "Ahh... I could really use a scrunchie.. yea you heard me."
So how is making it more masculine an excuse? -.-

[info]krylanna

October 27 2006, 15:28:36 UTC 5 years ago

I love the scrunchy /silly. I laughed until I cried when I first heard it.

They're still as feminine as ever, from what I've heard from the beta. They just look like the metro guys that hang out at the gym rather than the metro guys that hang out at bookstore cafes and hair salons.

The model looks now like what Prince Kael'thas is portrayed as in the concept art, but they don't match the previous WoW high elves nor do they match WCIII high elves. I think the latest version should be buffed up a tad bit more and used for the Prince instance boss or NPC, then the previous model brought back for player characters.

Really this is only going to affect my husband, since I've decided to play a female anyway. They still look better than my male night elf ever looked.

Well written, and extremely logical. I would like a link to the announcement for the change if you don't mind, before I sign anything. It's not that I don't trust you, ^.^ it's just I want to get all the facts before I add my two cents and put my name on anything. Thanks!

Unfortunately I'm late to jump on this bandwagon. I was taking a break from WoW in anticipation for the Burning Crusade [and rolling a muthafuckin' male blood elf, zomgzomgzomg], when all of a sudden this model change is brought to my attention and my dreams of blood elf-drag are shattered.

Fuck that.

Losing hope here...

Just played WoW V2.0.1 and saw some of the Blood Elf models that Blizzard placed in Azshara.
The models are the overgrown dumb looking types and not the cool looking slim ones.

Seems like the petition isn't helping much, about a thousand signatures at the moment.
Still about a month away from the release of "Burning Crusade", will Blizzard change there minds? I sadly doubt it.

More ugly male Blood Elves...

You can also see the horrible overgrown male Blood Elves in Eastern Plague Lands near the North Tower. There's also one standing in Ratchet near the vendor shops.

It's funny to see that some Blood Elf models haven't been changed yet by Blizzard, for example the two (female and male) standing near Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands, the male model still uses the High Elf model.
High Elves and Blood Elves are the same race or very closly related races. The great looking male Blood Elf model we all love, the one that Blizzard felt necessary (but oh so unnecessary) to change, was basically an updated (read improved) version of the High Elf model…sadly it’s gone and now only lives in videos posted on Youtube and Google Video.../cry

The End for our slim, sinister and elegant looking male Blood Elf...

It's over!!!
Thanks to Blizzard Azeroth will be infested by freakish and ugly looking Blood Elves...Beter get used to those horrible inflated male Blood Elf chests people. You will have to look at that thing everytime you see a Blood Elf from the side, especially during the Napoleon Dynamite dance which looks like crap with the new model.

Oh Brother and I was so looking forward to creating a male Blood Elf hunter...Not anymore. /cry
